Abstract
Since its commercial introduction just over twenty years ago, practitioners have implemented in situ thermal remediation at about 300 sites, removing organic compounds in all types of subsurface matrices, including clay, sand, silt, and sedimentary and metamorphic bedrock. Typical concentration reductions exceed 99%.
The presentation will cover the technology fundamentals, selection process and applications of the primary heating technologies:
- Electrical resistance heating (ERH) – for evaporating volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
- Steam enhanced extraction (SEE) – for extracting light non-aqueous liquids (LNAPL)
- Thermal conduction heating (TCH) – for volatilizing VOCs and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs)
Interestingly, we can apply TCH at temperatures to volatilize per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). DOD’s Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) has awarded TRS Group and its teaming partners three PFAS remediation projects: in situ and ex situ soil remediation and cleaning aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) fire suppression systems.

*Bio: Mark Kluger - A graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Mark Kluger has extensive experience in subsurface characterization and remediation technologies. Mark manages TRS Group’s business development efforts and works closely with the research and development team, investigating the application of thermal remediation technologies for emerging contaminants, including PFAS, 1,4-dioxane and energetic compounds. Mark is a long-standing member of ITRC, working with the DNAPL and PFAS teams.
Bio: Emily Crownover, Ph.D. - Emily is a TRS Group lead engineer, managing engineering staff and project implementation throughout the United States. Further, Emily manages TRS’ research and development program, focusing on power delivery optimization, enhancing biotic degradation kinetics, and 1,4-dioxane and PFAS remediation. Emily is currently involved with three ESTCP-funded PFAS projects.
